About this role
The Clinical Pharmacist in Specialty Pharmacy provides advanced pharmaceutical care to patients with complex health conditions requiring high-cost, high-touch specialty medications. This role focuses primarily on inflammatory and pulmonary service lines, with opportunities to support other clinical areas. It operates in a hybrid position based in Charlotte, NC.
Daily responsibilities include overseeing pharmaceutical care by retrieving and evaluating biomedical literature to design medication therapy regimens. Pharmacists use effective patient education techniques for counseling on therapy, adverse effects, compliance, and administration. They review medication orders, monitor pharmacotherapeutic regimens, and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
Collaboration occurs with the healthcare team to manage formulary adherence and medication-use processes. Support is provided for medication safety, quality improvement, and emergency management. Direction is given to pharmacy support team members for accurate workflows and regulatory compliance.
Growth opportunities include serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students, residents, and learners. Mentoring, orienting, and evaluating pharmacy teammates and students is emphasized. Performance in quality assurance and handling investigational medications expands clinical expertise.
Requirements
- Licensed in the state(s) of practice or eligible for reciprocity required
- Immunization and non-vaccine injectable certification required
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
- Knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span
- Ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret appropriate information for age-specific needs
- Experience designing patient-specific pharmacotherapeutic regimens based on biomedical literature
- Proficiency in evaluating medication orders and managing medical emergencies
Responsibilities
- Oversees pharmaceutical care, including retrieving and evaluating biomedical literature and designing medication therapy regimens
- Uses effective patient education techniques to provide counseling to patients and caregivers on medication therapy, adverse effects, compliance, appropriate use, handling, and administration
- Designs, recommends, monitors, and evaluates patient-specific pharmacotherapeutic regimens based on relevant biomedical literature
- Reviews and accurately interprets medication orders and prescriptions
- Actively supports department medication safety and quality improvement activities, including reporting events
- Collaborates with the healthcare team to manage formulary adherence and the medication-use process
- Prepares, dispenses, and oversees proper storage and handling of medications in accordance with best practices and regulations
- Serves as preceptor for pharmacy students, residents, and healthcare learners as assigned
