About this role
Under minimal supervision, the clinical specialist pharmacist reviews and approves medications, provides drug therapy management services for patients in assigned area, and delivers pharmacy services including drug information, patient education, and monitoring. As subject matter expert in specialized pharmacy, collaborates with leadership on policies, procedures, and clinical care guidelines for high quality pharmaceutical care. In daily operations, interprets and clarifies orders for all medications, researches drug information requests promptly, and monitors drug therapies for appropriateness, formulary adherence, and financial stewardship. Designs therapeutic regimens based on patient-specific information, selects appropriate drugs, and establishes dosing. Oversees compounding, labeling, and secure storage of medications per regulatory requirements.
Supervises pharmacy technicians and support staff per Colorado Board of Pharmacy rules, acts as consultant on medication issues, and assists in drug utilization programs. Participates in departmental meetings, huddles, and committees to resolve clinical and operational issues improving patient safety and efficiency. Complies with policies, quality improvement, and safety initiatives.
Leads quality improvement projects by identifying process enhancements for cost effectiveness and efficiency, resolves medication safety problems, and supports programs meeting patient safety goals and quality metrics. Assists in training pharmacists, residents, interns, students, and technicians while keeping job knowledge current through education specific to patient populations served.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice pharmacy consistent with Colorado Board of Pharmacy rules
- Subject matter expert in specialized pharmacy area such as acute care
- Ability to initiate, adjust, and monitor medications per provider orders and policies
- Knowledge of state, federal laws, and Joint Commission regulations
- Proficiency in sterile and non-sterile compounding, labeling, and packaging
- Competency standards including education specific to patient populations served
- Current knowledge of drug-drug, drug-food, drug-disease interactions
- Understanding of patient safety goals, core measures, and quality metrics
